The Director, Clinical Development & Clinical Education, will mentor and manage teams responsible for the coordination and support of multiple products and programs. This entails overseeing strategic direction for projects throughout the various stages of device and program life cycles, including, but not limited to, conducting research on clinical and customer needs, market data, clinical evaluations, sales trials, product launches, post-market surveillance, inventory management and field support.


In addition, this position will guide and support team members as they provide seminars and hands-on training opportunities to clinicians (primarily surgeons and surgical residents).


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Understand and follow Applied Medical's Quality Systems (QS) upon receiving training
  • Proficient in reading, writing, speaking, and comprehending English language
  • Fluent in native Japanese language
  • Lead the strategic procedure, implementation and product development to increase market adoption and penetration
  • Maintain a thorough understanding among the team of how our devices and programs are used by customers, as well as maintain awareness of our main competitors’ products and programs
  • Provide leadership on product and program development or enhancement projects, including, design input andvalidation, product positioning, clinical data research and compilation, post-market surveillance, labels, Customer Experience Reports (CER), and Instructions for Use (IFU)
  • Stay updated on current market and surgical procedure information
  • Strengthen and maintain relationships with thought leaders in Japan to accurately understand clinical needs
  • Protect and build product brands, including participation and contribution to organized national and international meetings and congresses
  • Identify team needs and manage cost center budgets
  • Actively participate in the recruitment, hiring and development of new team members
  • Mentor team members and build a highly effective team
  • Provide clear goals and expectations to the team
  • Address team members' career goals and provide coaching and development
  • Work closely with cross-departmental leadership to build bridges and achieve strategic company goals

Other Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist in other cross-functional and interdepartmental projects that may require support
  • Business travel is required

Team Member Working Relationships:

  • Coaching and development of Clinical Development and Clinical Education teams
  • Product and program related projects may require cooperation with Engineering, Planning, Regulatory, Global Education, and Field Implementation teams
  • General product and program, competitive analysis and relevant reports should be shared and presented to the Clinical Development team members at the home office in California and other locations
  • Product/program launches and trade shows will require collaboration with the Education, Branding, Field Implementation and international Clinical Development teams
  • Forecasting updates require collaboration with the Planning, Clinical Development, international and Engineering teams on a regular basis with direction from Senior Management when necessary Pricing changes and obsolescence projects will require cooperation with Senior Management, , Customer Relations, Field Operations, Contracts teams, as well as international Customer Relations andOperations teams
  • Collaborate with the Branding team tocreate and update labels, IFUs, websites, field implementation collateral and customer correspondence
  • Support for clinical evaluation and post-market surveillance may require cooperation with Field Implementation, Customer Relations, Regulatory, Field Operations and international Clinical Development teams


Knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Facilitate collaboration and open communication within the Clinical Development and Clinical Education teams, as well as amongst cross-functional teams
  • Formulate and critically assess reports, and present findings
  • Execute tasks in a timely manner, accurately and consistently
  • Proficiency using Microsoft Office programs, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook


  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification
  • Basic mathematics and analysis


  • Over 8 years of business-to-business (B2B) experience in Japan’s medical device industry. Preferably working in medical devices sales or marketing, clinical support, or in operating theatres
  • At least 6 years of project and product management experience in Japan’s medical device industry with 4 or more years managing or mentoring teams
  • Excellent oral and written skills in the English language
  • Excellent listening, negotiation, and presentation skills
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office and Windows PC applications
